Premise[]

Logan's incapacitation sets off a heated succession debate among his children, as the Board rushes to inform the media about leadership contingencies before the stock market opens. Greg is tasked to retrieve some important items from the Roy apartment. Kendall makes an impassioned final plea to keep Waystar/Royco in the family, and receives some sobering news.[1]

Plot synopsis[]

Kendall arrives at the hospital in a panic to see his father, Logan Roy, who is currently unresponsive. After questioning and berating the medical staff, he along with Connor, Shiv, and Roman are escorted out of the ICU into a waiting area.

Roman and Kendall are put in charge of damage control while company executives prepare for Logan's potential death, even drafting an obituary at ATN (the news network owned and operated by Waystar Royco). Connor becomes fixated on the idea of preserving their father's body via cryonics.[n 1] In another part of the hospital, Greg speaks to his mother on the phone, updating her on Logan's condition as well as asking for more money. Gerri and Karl arrive and pull Kendall aside and announce that he will be CEO in Logan's absence, and that Roman had been promoted to COO just before the stroke.

Roman pulls Shiv aside and confides that he feels guilty about not signing the trust papers. He insists that Shiv sign them as well considering she "caused" the stroke with her hardball tactics. Shiv is offended and slaps Roman, resulting in the two repeatedly hitting each other and tussling on the ground. Back in the waiting room, Marcia attempts to get rid of Greg, with whom she is growing aggravated, by tasking him with retrieving some things from her and Logan's apartment.

Connor brings Willa Ferreyra, an escort with whom he's been spending time, into the waiting room. Kendall informs his siblings that he's been appointed CEO; however, like their father, Shiv and Roman insist that he is unfit for the position. They're then informed by the doctor that Logan had a hemorrhagic stroke[n 2] and that they cannot perform surgery on him, given his age.[n 3] Shiv suggests moving him to another hospital but Marcia opposes, stating that as his next of kin she will be making the decisions. Kendall berates Lawrence Yee over the phone after having received flowers from him. He then asks that Lawrence not yet report on the incident; however, against his wishes, Lawrence publishes an article on the family titled "Shit Show at the Fuck Factory." Kendall then asks Frank to come back as COO in place of Roman, but he declines. Shiv and Roman ask Gerri to step up as CEO, but she declines as well.

Several hours later, Rava arrives at the hospital to comfort Kendall. Tom and Shiv are away from the others when he spontaneously proposes to her. Shiv says "yes" under the condition that he ask again under better circumstances. Kendall and Roman agree to work together as CEO and COO, respectively.

Gerri warns Kendall of the difficulties regarding his job: she reveals that in 1985, Logan took out a loan through the family holding company, adding to their preexisting considerably debt, in order to expand the company into parks. Furthermore, she explains that the debt (approximately $3 billion in total) is secured against their stock. If the stock were fall below $130 per share, the bank would be entitled to full repayment, eviscerating the company.

Marcia remains by Logan's bedside, where he begins to wake up, as the rest of the family disperses from the hospital.

Notes[]

  1. ↑ Cryonics, commonly known as cryogenic freezing, is a process that involves preserving human bodies at extremely low temperatures with the hope of potentially restoring them to life and health in the future. (source)
  2. ↑ A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a weakened vessel ruptures and bleeds into the surrounding brain. The blood accumulates and compresses the surrounding brain tissue. It is usually caused by high blood pressure or trauma; consuming blood-thinning drugs may also increase a person's risk. (source)
  3. ↑ This is not the case for real life, as there is generally no age limit for undergoing skull-related surgeries.
