Connor Roy is the eldest son of Logan Roy and half-brother to Kendall, Roman, and Shiv Roy. He is portrayed by Alan Ruck.
Personality[]
Connor Roy boasts a milder, more pleasant persona than his siblings, while maintaining a rich-boy loftiness and ignorance. He prefers to avoid company drama and reside in New Mexico with his much younger partner, Willa. Connor does not have the best recollection of his childhood and feels unwanted by his family, especially his father. Because of this, he is deeply insecure about his status and is prone to delusions of grandeur, even deciding to run for president despite having little to no chance of winning.
History[]
Early life[]
Connor Roy claims to have been interested in politics since a very young age.[1] His mother suffered from mental heath problems, resulting in being institutionalized by Logan. Connor was no longer able to see her from then on. To cope with the institutionalization, Connor ate sponge cakes for a week straight, which the rest of the family referred to as "loony cakes" to mock him.[2] Connor lacked a connection with his father, even being isolated from him for several years, which transpires into his adulthood.
In "Dundee", Roman mocks Connor and his mother's institutionalization by saying "my mommy got sent to the booby hatch, and now I'm sad."
Season 1[]
The Roy family has gathered to celebrate Logan's 80th birthday. He arrives and refuses to open Connor's gift, although Connor presents it to him several times. Eventually, Connor shows off the present: a container of sourdough starter, a way to make traditional bread without yeast like back in Scotland. After dinner, they have their traditional game of baseball. Logan insists that his children, excluding Kendall, fly with him back to New York City. While inside the helicopter, the siblings get into a fight with their father once again. They all demand to know why Marcia should be involved in the company at all. The fight stops as soon as Logan begins to have a stroke, the family then immediately heading to the hospital.[3]
Connor arrives at the hospital following his father's stroke. He becomes fixated on the idea of cryogenics and preserving his father, if he were to die. Connor is also in support of signing the trust paperwork that would grant Marcia ownership of the company, as it's what Logan would've wanted. Connor later brings his much younger girlfriend and former escort, Willa, to the hospital.[4]
Connor, alongside Shiv and Tom, go to visit their father after his leave from the hospital. Marcia, however pushes them away, claiming that he cannot have visitors.[5]
Connor has been put in charge of the company's big charity dinner. Connor speaks with his father to confirm that he's aware of Kendall's speech, but Logan says that he himself will be speaking instead. Connor grows very neurotic, even throwing a tantrum over the butter being cold and becoming aggravated with Willa. Connor then informs Kendall of Logan's speech, worrying Kendall.[6]
Connor arrives at the Roy family Thanksgiving dinner with Willa. Kendall and Shiv gossip about and poke fun at the couple. Connor tells Willa that he wants to assist in her writing career, and to not worry at all about finances. He then proposes an exclusive arrangement, giving her "more free time for the theater."[7]
The Roy family agrees to a weekend-long family therapy session at Austerlitz, Connor's ranch in New Mexico, although Logan is hesitant.[Notes 1] Kendall is also hesitant, but later changes his mind. He arrives intoxicated and begins picking fights and insults Willa, who then leaves and is followed by Connor. The next morning, the rest of the Roy children leave Austerlitz. Connor confesses his feelings to Willa and suggests their relationship be exclusive, to which she reluctantly agrees.[8]
When Roman reveals that Tom and his bachelor party will no longer be going to Prague, Connor is disappointed, since he had been training his circadian rhythm for the past two weeks in order to party hard.
Kendall and Roman begin arguing, and Roman decides to confront him about being locked in a cage and forced to eat dog food when he was four years old. Kendall insists that Roman enjoyed it. When Kendall mentions this to Connor, Connor also confirms that Roman asked to be put in there, and that the dog food was only chocolate cake. Roman claims the incident led him to start wetting the bed, which resulted in their father sending him to military school. Again, Connor claims that their father sent him away because Roman begged to go, yet later admits to Kendall that their father did it because he viewed Roman as "the weaker dog."[9]
While at Tom and Shiv's big pre-wedding party, Connor and Willa speak to the priest.[Notes 2] Willa tells him that she's a playwright and jokes that Connor "doesn't do anything," which insults him. Connor says that for work, he is safeguarding 30,000 acres of wilderness and on the verge of setting up a podcast on Napoleonic history, with a considerable level of investment interest.
Towards the end of the night, Shiv, Kendall and Roman meet at the docks like old times, before realizing they forgot to invite Connor.[10]
It's finally the day of Shiv and Tom's wedding, and both families have gathered around to take photos. Shiv asks that Connor's girlfriend, Willa, be left out of the photos, but Connor insists until Shiv complies. Connor informs Willa that he wants to run for President of the United States, and promises they will do what's needed to cover up her sordid past. He later reveals this to the rest of the family as well, but everyone is both shocked and unimpressed, assuming he will soon abandon the idea.[11]
Season 2[]
The Roy family take a short trip to the Hamptons. There, Logan asks his family what he should do with the company: buy, or sell it. Connor wants his father to keep the company, as it will look better for him when he runs for president.[12] Connor and his girlfriend Willa host a soiree celebrating their return to New York, though Connor takes it as an opportunity to quietly announce his political campaign. He doesn't explicitly announce this to anyone, but is sure to plant the idea into their heads.[13]
Tabitha and Roman are looking over Connor Roy's presidential campaign video. He wants to rid of taxes and threatens the government try and sue him for not paying his. Logan wants Shiv to talk with her brother Connor about his anti-tax campaign, as it could jeopardize several of Logan's important connections.
Shiv tells her brother Connor not to use his no-tax message as the base for his presidential campaign. He says heâll think on it, and then offers his sister a position to work with him. Shiv decides to tag along with Willa while she goes out for drinks with her girlfriend, hoping to subtly let her know her opinion of Connor's campaign and convince her to talk to him. Connor, against his family's wishes, proceeds with the release of his campaign video.[14]
Connor and Willa arrive at former board member Moeâs funeral. Connor is surprisingly very excited, as he hopes to meet potential investors in his presidential campaign. After misusing the name with his family, Connor informs Willa that "Moe" is simply a nickname and his real name was Lester, "Moe" being short for "molester." At the funeral, Connor informs Willa that the rest of the family won't be coming, due to being on lockdown at Waystar. She shares that she overheard some odd stories about Moe, coming from some of Logan's old buddies. Connor plays it off as them being from another generation, but Willa reminds him that Michelle Pantsil is present, and convinces Connor to change his eulogy so as to not be mixed in with Moe later during his Presidential run. Before going up to the front, Willa re-writes a very basic and generic speech to give, sabotaging Pantsil.[15]
Connor and Willa Ferreyra talk to Maxim Pierce, as he and Connor are both into politics. It soon becomes clear that Connor is out of his league, as Maxim works for the Brookings Institute, a public policy think tank in Washington, D.C. Logan later scolds in children, including Connor for talking about politics too much. Later, Connor once again becomes frustrated when talking politics while Ken puts his hand on his back, reminding him to keep his temper.[16]
Everyone is gathered in upper East New York to watch the opening night of Willa's half-baked play, where Kendall seduces the lead actress, Jennifer. This later upsets Willa as her lead is missing when needed, and Connor confronts Kendall for her. The Roy siblings must record messages for their father's 50th anniversary celebration. Connor goes into the booth and records a very heartfelt message for Logan. Connor later bugs Logan by asking if he would consider investing in Willa's play.[17]
After the testimony, the Roys decide to vacation on their yacht. Connor and Willa, who is upset that her play has been panned by critics, are first to arrive. Connor is scrolling through the reviews of her play when Willa, frustrated upon seeing that they're mostly very negative, tosses Connor's tablet into the sea. Connor later asks Logan for money, admitting that his campaign is robbing him and he can't cover the loss of Willa's play. Logan agrees, so long as Connor suspend his presidential campaign.
At breakfast the next morning, Logan is taking suggestions for who should be sacrificed following the cruise-line scandals. Connor volunteers, asking for cash in return, which amuses Logan and he thanks Connor for the gesture.[18]
