"Chiantishire" is the eighth episode of the third season of Succession and twenty-eighth of the series overall. It premiered on December 5, 2021 on HBO and HBO Max. It was written by Jesse Armstrong and directed by Mark Mylod.

Premise[]

After a tense board meeting to discuss acquisition of Matsson's GoJo, Roman shares his suspicions about their mother's new beau with Shiv. As a luxe family wedding gets underway in Italy, Gerri draws a line in the sand with Roman, the Waystar team grows increasingly concerned about Matsson's rogue tweets, and Shiv and Caroline have a heart-to-heart, of sorts.[1]

Plot synopsis[]

At a company board meeting, Stewy and Sandi are informed of Waystar's plans to acquire streaming giant GoJo. After, the Roys head for Tuscany to attend Caroline's wedding. Roman discovers that Caroline's soon-to-be husband, Peter Munion, has a rather long history of failed marriages and business ventures, and is likely using Caroline in hopes to get closer to Waystar. Roman expresses these concerns to his mother, yet she dismisses them. Connor proposes to Willa in front of other wedding guests, hoping to deflect from the press probing into her sex-worker background. Willa, however, is uncomfortable and cannot give him an answer.

Roman sees that Gerri has a relationship with a former DOJ attorney and grows jealous. She then pulls him aside and discreetly asks him to stop sending her unsolicited pictures of his penis, although Roman doesn't take her request seriously.

Kendall demands to have dinner with Logan privately, for which Kendall prepared the food himself, adhering to Logan's dietary restrictions. Logan is untrusting of Kendall and calls in Iverson to test the food for him. Iverson complies, but the gesture offends Kendall. He proposes taking the $2 billion buyout that Logan previously offered him to permanently separate himself from the company, referring to his father and Waystar as "evil" and "corrupt." Logan is offended at these remarks and brings up Andrew Dodds, insinuating that he is no worse a man than Kendall, and has been the one to rectify Kendall's every mistake.

While out on a bachelorette night, Caroline confesses to Shiv that she never wanted children, and should've had dogs instead. She encourages that Shiv not bear a child herself, saying that some women are just not fit to be mothers, implying that Shiv is not either. Out of spite, Shiv proposes to Tom that they have a child, but tells him during sex that she does not love him and believes herself to be far too good for him. The next day, Tom is seemingly upset so Shiv writes her comments off as pure foreplay. She then discusses the option of freezing her embryos to ensure the survival of her offspring even in divorce or death. Tom, however, simply wishes to conceive with her in the near future.

GoJo's stock price increases drastically after Matsson tweets that he is about to receive major financing, which concerns Waystar. Roman then meets with Matsson and learns that he is more interested in a merger of equals with Waystar than an acquisition.

Roman sends an accidental text

Logan, Roman, Shiv, Tom, and Gerri then travel to Milan to meet with GoJo's bankers. Roman gives word of Matsson's interest in merging to Logan, who approves of the idea and applauds Roman for his work. The meeting is quickly derailed once Roman accidentally sends Logan a picture of his penis, intended for Gerri. Logan confronts Roman and debates firing Gerri to avoid blowback, which Roman advises against as it wasn't her fault. Shiv, hoping to undermine Roman, suggests to Gerri that she file a formal complaint against him for sexual harassment, but Gerri refuses to engage.

Kendall, meanwhile, drunkenly lays face down in a pool and allows himself to fall asleep, his head sinking into the water.
